The European Commission has said it wants journeys taken by livestock to be shorter, with mandatory breaks. The Brussels-based authority proposed on Thursday that journeys to the slaughterhouse should be a maximum of nine hours long. Until now, there has been no time limit for such journeys. The commission also wants to limit journeys with a destination other than a slaughterhouse to a maximum of 21 hours, with a break of at least one hour after 10 hours.
